Community Helpers

Today's Book is called The Berenstain Bears: Jobs Around Town by Stan and Jan Berenstain.

"Searching for the perfect job, the Bear siblings learn to celebrate the many talents of others and begin to imagine where their own God-given gifts will take them as they grow." This book is a great way to help children learn all about the different people and the jobs they hold in their communities!

Read along with the book here

The first activity is a doctors kit, one that all kids are sure to love! This fun idea is from Homeschool Creations. What you will need:
-Black, white, and red construction paper
-Scissors
-Glue and tape
-Q-tips, large craft stick, bandaids, a cotton ball, gauze bandage and other ‘medical’ supplies you might have around {that are safe for children}

Cut the large piece of black construction paper into a rectangle and fold in half. For the handles, cut 2 pieces that look like the letter 'C'. Glue them to the top of the paper where it opens. Cut a circle from the white paper and then two small rectangles from the red paper for the first aid sign. Now that you have the case, tape the doctors items found around the house inside. It would also be beneficial to explain which each of the doctors tools do and why, so when they go to the doctor they know what to expect if they don't already. :)

Singing Time!

This song is from Preschool Plan It. It is a sweet and simple song that can teach/remind children a little bit about what each person in the community does. :)
Good Morning Song
(Sung to the tune of Happy Birthday)
Good morning to you!
And how do you do?
I am the doctor
Healing people like you!
Additional verses:
I am the nurse, helping the doctor help you.
I am the dentist, giving tooth care to you.
I am the firefighter, fighting fires for you.
I am the grocer, selling food to you.
I am the police officer, solving crimes for you.
I am the mail carrier, bringing letters to you.
I am the carpenter, building houses for you.
I am the teacher, teaching children like you.
I am the librarian, lending books to you.

Bakers and Restaurants are also a big part of a community! This activity is from a blog called PreKinders. For this activity you will need:

-Paper
-Scissors
-Glue
-Markers
-Grocery add/newspaper

Children are to make a restaurant menu of their own by cutting out the different food items from a grocery add or newspaper. First, fold a piece of paper in half to make the menu (looks like a book). Have the child cut out and glue their food items from the adds on the inside. Have them make up a name for their restaurant and write it on the front of the menu. This would be great to have the child use when they play pretend restaurant!

Because there are so many different community helpers, there are many more books and activities for children to learn about! Here are some websites to some more fun stuff!
